Scituate Pastor's Corner

On September 21st, 2015, we will be having our 16th annual golf tournament, which was renamed in 2008 to St. Mary of the Nativity Fr. Daniel J. Kennedy Memorial Golf Tournament. This tournament raises money for both the parish and a scholarship fund in Fr. Kennedy’s name for a seminarian in need at St. John’s Seminary in Brighton.

For those new to the parish, Fr. Dan Kennedy spent three years here in Scituate during his time in the seminary. He touched the lives of both young and old and everyone in between with his faith, youth and vitality. One of the things he did here was teach religious education to our students leaving a lasting impression with many of them. For several years Daniel was one of the most popular Confirmation names chosen by the young men making their Confirmation.

Fr. Kennedy was ordained a priest in the spring of 2007 and was assigned to St. John the Evangelist Parish in Winthrop where he shared his faith and love of the Church with that community. On January 27, 2008 he completed his assignment there and was getting ready for his new assignment at Gate of Heaven Parish in South Boston. Later that day, while visiting his brother in Connecticut, Fr. Kennedy died of a heart attack due to an undiagnosed congenital heart defect. This came as a shock to all who knew him because he was a marathon runner and he was only thirty- four years old.

To show their love and appreciation for Fr. Dan the parish changed the name of our golf tournament to honor him and contribute to the scholarship fund established in his name. If you play golf and you would like to support this worthy cause you can still sign up to play. If you do not play golf but would like to participate in this event you may attend the dinner at Hatherly Country Club or you could volunteer to help at the course. Please call the parish office Monday morning.

Sincerely yours in Christ,

Fr. Cannon
